The "King of Ragtime" pianist Johnny Maddox (1927-2018), a native of Gallatin, Tennessee, began working for his friend Randy Wood at Randy's Record Shop, where he would become the first successful artist for Dot Records, which helped build Dot into one of the most popular labels of the 1950's. He toured the country, playing many nightclubs, and had a very successful recording career. In 1954, Maddox was declared the Number One Jukebox Artist in America.
