The Werthan Family, standing in front of their manufacturing plant, Werthan Bag Corporation, 1400 8th Avenue North. The storied manufacturer had a history in Middle Tennessee and had been run by Nashville’s Werthan family since the late 1860s, later purchasing the defunct Marathon Motors Works in 1918 and converted this facility into a bag factory. In 1928 they acquired the textile bag plant, cotton mill, bleachery, and finishing plant of the Morgan & Hamilton Company, 1400 8th Avenue N., moving their operations there. The company went bankrupt in 2016, selling to a competitor in Illinois.
