Zollicoffer was born in Bigbyville, TN in 1812. He served in the United States Congress from 1853 to 1859, and at some point resided in a townhome on High Street in Nashville. He opposed Tennessee's secession from the Union. Nevertheless, upon Tennessee's secession, Zollicoffer offered his service to the state army, and was appointed as a brigadier general in the Provisional Army of Tennessee (CSA) in 1861. He led the first Confederate invasion of Eastern Kentucky and was killed in action at the Battle of Mill Springs (1862). He is interred in the Old City Cemetery, Nashville, TN.
