Jake Sheridan, Garner Robinson, and Elkin Garfinkle formed a powerful Nashville political machine known as "The Old Hickory Gang." Much of their escapades are well covered in the book, "The Secrets of Hopewell Box: Stolen Elections, Southern Politics and a City's Coming of Age," by James D. Squires.

Nashville businessman Herschel Greer helped form Vols Incorporated in the 1950's, in an attempt to save the financially struggling baseball team, the Nashville Vols. Later, the Nashville Sounds original stadium was named after him.
