Built in 1851 on land purchased by the state of Tennessee in 1848, after activist-reformer Dorothea Dix called for improved facilities. Prominent architect Adolphus Heiman designed the Gothic-style building. Opened in 1852 and renamed Central State Hospital in 1920, it closed in 1995. A stone gatehouse and unmarked graves are all that remain. This building was located on Murfreesboro Road where the Dell Computer center now stands. This print is from an old postcard.
