Famed pilot Jimmy Doolittle at Blackwood Field, Nashville, TN. Doolittle sitting 2nd from right.

Blackwood Field was opened in 1921 on property donated by H.O. Blackwood. Located near the intersection of Shute Lane and Lebanon Pike, on the property of The Hermitage. The airfield property consisted of a 100-acre flying site, complete with a WWI hanger. The first airmail flight from Nashville was conducted from this field to Chicago in 1924. The field was closed in 1928.
